The Earliest Days of NASA

Maria Popova, at Brain Pickings, happened upon a treasure trove of early NASA (and its airplane-only predecessor NACA) archive photos. They are really something. From biplanes to the Mercury capsule, pre-1950 aeronautics seemed to live by the motto of “If we build it, then we can go there.” That’s a sentiment we could use a bit more of.

More here.

I’ve “met” that big tank thinger in the first picture! It was part of NACA/NASA’s first wind tunnel, if I remember correctly! Now hanging out at Langley Research Center in VA.

why the fuck aren’t glue sticks square so you can get the corners

you are a genius

how are you supose to screw them down if they’re square then?

maybe you could push them up?

How do you push them back down?

A lever on the side like one of those multiple-color click pens, so you could push/pull it up and down?

Only on tumblr will you have 20,000+ people discussing glue sticks.

They totally could be square and you still twist the end to make them go up and down. The glue itself doesn’t rotate when you twist the twisty bit (technical term), it just gets pushed up on a little platform that’s forced up by the little screw/stick attached to the bottom twisty bit! Same sort of mechanism as deodorant sticks, which are usually oblong rather than round, so could just as easily be square or any other shape!
