being a good little nerd and half-watching the sci-fi channel as i work on a pet project of mine (to be posted when completed), i’ve been vaguely aware that battlestar galactica is on, but not really paying attention, because i gave up on trying to follow the plot after season 1.
then i heard one of the little contest promotion blurbs, this one sponsored by kfc, saying,
“KFC salutes BSG fans!”
to which i can only respond with another acronym, “WTF?”
first of all, really? yes, anyone who still maintains battlestar fandom after these last few years of incomprehensible nonsense does deserve some kudos, but has it really gotten so ridiculous that even the show’s promoters (and a random fast food joint) feel the need to honor these dedicated few? (it’s on the website too: http://www.scifi.com/battlestar/sweepstakes )
secondly, if they want to say, “hey, good for you! thanks for watching!” thats great. but “salutes”? seriously? we salute soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines. maybe firefighters or police. if we really want to stretch it, perhaps doctors and nurses, teachers, or other people in service careers. we salute people who have dedicated their lives to (and given them for) the common good. and now they’re saluting battlestar galactica fans?
please, enlighten me. what exactly are they doing for society? i’m not saying there’s anything wrong with bsg fans, just that this is a gross misuse of a “salute.” i’m sure there are some bsg fans out there that should be saluted, but not because of their fandom! a salute is an expression of honor and respect to be earned, whether by act or position, not by choice of television programming.
come on people, save the saluting for those who deserve it.

despite not actually falling asleep until 10:30 this morning, i got up around 1. brilliant? not so much. i have a headache now, but then again i always have a headache, and today was worth it.
the last 5 hours consisted almost entirely of bumming around with very entertaining friends, and very tasty foodage. first there was brunch in the apartment with some roomies and others, for which ray made deliciousness, as has become the usual around here. then i took a very cold walk over to the sf house for hot chocolate and holly scones, and general ridiculousness.
apparently, in the beginning, there was a snowman mug, and it was good. the snowman was named sam. god thought it was so rad, he created chocolate and milk and “hot” so there could be hot chocolate, and then decided to create humans so they could enjoy it, and use this awesome snowman mug. eventually, the mug came to be in a little house on lisburn road, and today, a girl named sam was there too, and thus she was deemed “sam two” and the snowman “sam one” because clearly, the snowman mug existed first.
also, pictionary down the lane, or whatever its called, might just be my new favorite materials-on-hand game (being one that doesn’t require a purchased board, cards, or pieces, just a few things you inevitably already have, in this case scraps of paper and something to write with)… it was quite funny… with a side of morbid… and turtles ^_^
then, tho i have no idea how, we got onto the subject of dr horrible, which of course resulted in an epic sing-a-long… i was sad to discover i had left my phone in my apartment so i couldn’t show off my latest ringtone (brand new day) but such is life. and we decided we all needed to get together and watch it with the dvd extras, and then that we should try to get the cinema and use the big screen… and then we decided to add a legit descussion to the event and make it an alternate chapel so we could get chapel credit for watching dr horrible’s sing-a-long blog… how great is that?
today was a good day. i enjoy those.
i do not enjoy the fact that i cannot seem to get myself on the sort of schedule that involves sleeping at night… ah well, such is life.
tomorrow should be a good day too.
