Got an email from school asking for nominations for what movie to show as part of the spring honors congress… so I of course nominated “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” because really, why wouldn’t I? It asked for the name of the movie, followed by a short statement as to why you like the movie (which I interpreted more as “convince them to show it for honors credit”… so this is what I sent:
I nominate “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”!
It’s a short-but-brilliant, award winning, sarcastic, touching, hilarious, musical challenge to the film/television industry, spawned by the writers’ strike a few years ago. It turns Hollywood convention upside-down, with an “aspiring supervillain” as its sympathetic protagonist, a self-proclaimed (and self-absorbed) hero as the bad guy, a bittersweet (ironic/tragic/surprising) ending, and the intent, as writer/director Joss Whedon puts it, “to make it on the fly, on the cheap – but to make it. To turn out a really thrilling, professionalish piece of entertainment specifically for the internet. To show how much could be done with very little. To show the world there is another way. To give the public (and in particular you guys) something for all your support and patience. And to make a lot of silly jokes. Actually, that sentence probably should have come first.”
