Life of Scientist Who Changed the World’s View

Carl Sagan

“I can find in my undergraduate classes, bright students who do not know that the stars rise and set at night, or even that the Sun is a star.”- Carl Sagan

Stephen Hawking

“Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don’t just give up.” -Stephen Hawking

Neil deGrasse Tyson

Like no other science, astrophysics cross-pollinates the expertise of chemists, biologists, geologists and physicists, all to discover the past, present, and future of the cosmos—and our humble place within it.” -Neil deGrasse Tyson

 Albert Einstein

“Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I’m not sure about the the universe.” -Albert Einstein

Niels Bohr

“Never express yourself more clearly than you are able to think.” - Niels Bohr

Richard Feynman

“Poets say science takes away from the beauty of the stars - mere globs of gas atoms. I, too, can see the stars on a desert night, and feel them. But do I see less or more?”- Richard Feynman

Marie Curie

“In science, we must be interested in things, not in persons.” -Marie Curie

Rosalind Franklin

“You look at science (or at least talk of it) as some sort of demoralising invention of man, something apart from real life, and which must be cautiously guarded and kept separate from everyday existence. But science and everyday life cannot and should not be separated. Science, for me, gives a partial explanation for life. In so far as it goes, it is based on fact, experience and experiment.” -Rosalind Franklin

Nikola Tesla

“I do not think there is any thrill that can go through the human heart like that felt by the inventor as he sees some creation of the brain unfolding to success… such emotions make a man forget food, sleep, friends, love, everything.”-Nikola Tesla.

Thomas Edison

“I never did a day’s work in my life. It was all fun. I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” -Thomas Edison

1) baby science heroes!

2) I think I have a crush on Neil deGrasse Tyson

Science-ify your breakfast with a Möbius bagel

You’ve probably heard of a Möbius strip before - it’s a continuous shape that only has one side and one edge. You can make one pretty easily by cutting a strip of paper, giving it a half twist, and taping the ends together to form a loop. However, if you want to really impress, make a Möbius bagel. By following the instructions, you can cut your bagel (or your donut!) into two interlocking bagel halves. From now on, eat your breakfast like a Scientist!

Math up your breakfast, and increase shmear surface area at the same time!! Win-win.

HOLYCRAP. I love Moebius strips… but Moebius BAGEL?!

The Olde Curiosity Shot

A new full-color self portrait was released this week, taken by the Curiosity rover’s MAHLI imager, stitched together from several shots (hence the disembodiedness to it all). Standing so proud, so ready to science, so prepared to rock the rocks.

We’re in a new era of science excitement. I can feel it. Because I know I’m not the only one who smiles ear to ear when I look at these photos from another planet, seemingly sent with the ease that we Instagram our lunch, but full of a million times more promise than any sandwich.

The Beautiful Blackboards of Quantum Physics Labs

Alejandro Guijarro visited the world’s finest quantum physics labs to record their half-erased blackboards. In an era where science is increasingly all-digital, it’s a striking reminder that science is still an active, hands-on process, a process here captured in layers of smeared chalk.

One of these is going to be my new desktop wallpaper at work.

#26: Fond of Stars
“I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night.”
—Galileo
Which decides your course of action: your goals or the uncertainties surrounding them?  If you’re passionate about Something, if you love it, your focus will be on that Thing and you everything else will simply be part of the pursuit.  What “night” is dimming your view of the stars?  Don’t let the unsure darkness warp your view or remove your eyes from your Star.  Don’t let it stop you; instead, let your Stars brighten that night and make it something beautiful.
Additional note: I picked this quote for today because it’s the one-year anniversary of my first NASATweetup event.  In fact, the first tie I saw this quote was when another participant in that event shared it!  I almost didn’t even go to this event at Wallops Flight Facility last year because I was very unsure about travelling such a distance all on my own (I’d never done it before then), but in the end the adventure was too intriguing.  I love the opportunity too much to be fearful of the “night”.  And I’m sure glad I went!  This tumblr, for one, would not exist if not for everything that trip ended up being the gateway to!

The NASA JPL EDL team led by Adam Steltzner took a big technology gamble on their supersonic parachute + autonomous free flight + sky crane landing on Mars. A move Steltzner himself said “seems crazy” in the now epic “7 minutes of terror” video.  But just how did the odds stack up? The infographic tells the story.

Light, which normally travels the 240,000 miles from the Moon to Earth in less than two seconds, has been slowed to the speed of a minivan in rush-hour traffic — 38 miles an hour.

An entirely new state of matter, first observed four years ago, has made this possible. When atoms become packed super-closely together at super-low temperatures and super-high vacuum, they lose their identity as individual particles and act like a single super- atom with characteristics similar to a laser.

Such an exotic medium can be engineered to slow a light beam 20 million-fold from 186,282 miles a second to a pokey 38 miles an hour.

“In this odd state of matter, light takes on a more human dimension; you can almost touch it,” says Lene Hau, a Harvard University physicist.

[…]

In the future, slowing light could have a number of practical consequences, including the potential to send data, sound, and pictures in less space and with less power. Also, the results obtained by Hau’s experiment might be used to create new types of laser projection systems and night vision cameras with power requirements a million times less than what is presently possible.

[…]

It took Hau and three colleagues several years to make a container of the new matter. Then followed a series of 27-hour-long trial runs to get all the parts and parameters working together.

“So many things have to go right,” Hau comments. “But the results finally exceeded our expectations. It’s fascinating to see a beam of light almost come to a standstill.”
